Chickweed

--for Mom

mouse-eared

taproot sprawling

delicate the white

buds short-lived

spring perennials

thrive

what the violets

don't claim

chickweed does

look at the country-

side field all blooming

with color--whites &

blues & purples

the season shouldn't

be a war b/c nature

will always win out

you the constant

gardener fight

the insidious

threat destroy

the predators

but sometimes

the invasive win

someday we won't

have a home

the history of all

of us the beauty

& love & all the

creatures we raised

you must embrace

the ugly too--

it won't always eat us

there are a few of us left
